School Programs take place in our growing network of partnering schools on Chicago’s South Side and provide Teaching Artists for residencies, reaching thousands of students annually through after-school and arts integration programming. The program incorporates artist residencies, after-school classes, classroom teacher arts integration training sessions, parent workshops, and Advancement in the Arts opportunities. We offer the following programs:
Arts Integration Classroom Residency is an in-school program that provides quality integrative and vigorous visual art programming that is tied to classroom academic curriculum. Teaching artists work with classroom teachers to develop curriculum that reinforce the themes and topics being addressed in the classroom.
The program aims to challenge youth in the conventional classroom to become better learners and to allow teachers to see students in a different light while providing them with access to creative teaching techniques. The program is designed to impact students socially and emotionally as well as increase their potential academic aptitude through increased exposure to right-brained learning opportunities.
After-school Classes focus on high quality arts programming in an after-school setting. SkyART provides a wide range of classes tailored to meet school needs and students’ interests. Curriculum content is designed based on grade level. For example, younger students may explore ideas of family and community, while older kids often engage in more complex concepts of identity and social issues. Some of our classes include printmaking, painting, drawing, fabric art, and collage. These wide-ranging classes give youth a chance to explore different media, broaden their artistic vocabulary, and acquire tools to express themselves in new ways.
Advancement in the Arts I aims to help students build their art portfolios, explore college options, research scholarship and financial aid opportunities, and provide aid in paying for college application fees. Program staff guide students through the process of writing strong artist statements for college admissions and identifying what should be in their portfolio. We also partner with school staff and counselors to prepare youth for SAT/ACT testing, to identify and help students apply for scholarship and grant opportunities, and to provide other general supportive services as it relates to the program.
Classroom Teacher Arts Integration Training provides professional development for classroom teachers that equip them with tools, resources, and technique to engage their students creatively in more right-brained thinking. These workshops provide helpful instruction for classroom teachers to facilitate the incorporation of art in their classroom and in their academic curriculum. These workshops are designed to help teachers think differently about teaching and engage students in a way that enhances overall classroom comprehension and performance. Teachers also get to complete an art project and see first-hand how art integrates with academic subject areas.
