History

Originally known as the South Chicago Art Center, SkyART began in 2001 with one employee who taught 18 students two days a week in a small rented studio. Over the years, the organization has grown. But we have never forgotten the commitment made during that first year: to provide young people with quality programming in a safe, accessible space. That commitment, shaped by an abiding responsiveness to community needs, has guided our growth and positioned SkyART as a trusted center for creativity and community.

Growing Programs & Artist Garden

Stretching outside the studio in 2002, we initiated programming at two nearby schools, with whom we still work today. In 2003, we established our own independent non-profit status and founded our 15,000 square foot (four city lots) Artist Garden. The Artist Garden is an outdoor studio space for program participants and a community garden for our neighbors. In 2006, we expanded our reach beyond South Chicago to include programs at schools in neighboring communities.

The BIG JUMP

Our biggest jump yet came in October 2015, when we changed our name and moved our headquarters into a newly refurbished 6,000 sq ft studio facility.  SkyART’s main studio in South Chicago includes three multi-purpose art spaces, a state-of-the-art computer lab equipped for a variety of digital media applications, a sculpture studio, a kitchen studio and a gallery space. Following the move to our new space, in the fall of 2017 we successfully completed our $2,500,000 Campaign for Limitless Potential. Fulfilling and developing our mission through a rich variety of programs, partnerships and initiatives, active in over a dozen South Side neighborhoods, we are now in our 20th year of operation and still the only free visual arts program of our kind in the entire City of Chicago.

Project Impact

During the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, SkyART staff knew how important it was to remain connected to our participants. We also understood that children in our community would bear a disproportionate burden of the stress and trauma caused by a global pandemic and the inequities the crisis laid bare. Project Impact was created in response to the pervasive mental health crises born from months of isolation, financial hardship and loss. SkyART’s Project Impact program takes a strength-based approach to mental health services for youth, providing support for their families and collaborating with community partner organizations or school’s to provide accessible art therapy programs. Like all of our programs, art therapy through Project Impact is entirely free of cost to families. At the end of FY21, after a full year of providing mental health services to Chicago youth, SkyART was providing art therapy for more than 50 youth every week.

SkyART West

In 2020, SkyART announced our expansion to Chicago’s West Side. Beginning with programs in one school, SkyART started reaching out to communities in the Austin, Garfield Park and Humboldt Park neighborhoods and searching for a space where we could build a second SkyART studio. The Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic put our plans of opening a second location on hold for a year, but we moved forward with building relationships and virtual programs for West Side communities. In the Spring of 2021, SkyART launched the West Side School Engagement Grant providing a full semester of programming for schools at no cost. In the summer of 2021, renovation of our second location began in earnest. SkyART will begin programming at SkyART west in January, 2022. This exciting growth coincides with our 20th anniversary, and we are so excited to see where 20 more years takes us.
