Project 3rd Space

SkyART’s signature teen program, Project 3rd Space (P3S), offers a deep dive into the possibilities of art while also maintaining SkyART’s Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and process-based methodology. Teens are challenged to think about why they are making and “think with their hands” in a process of self exploration akin to what happens in a contemporary artist’s studio. P3S was designed to offer teens access to professional opportunities in the arts, encouraging critical thinking as well as civic-engagement. Participants have the opportunity to curate, exhibit and sell their work, keeping 75 percent of any sale, and also work with international visiting artists. SkyART hires a cohort of Teaching Artists, all of whom have a professional practice, to work with participants in a collaborative artist-in-residence model, where teens work alongside them to explore different mediums, techniques and topics. At the end of each 10-week session, P3S participants receive a stipend for their participation with adequate attendance.

Like SkyWAY, P3S participants first come together to share a mindful moment and then choose which Teaching Artists they will work with during skill building. But, unlike SkyWAY, Project 3rd Space lasts the entire day. Participants are treated to a home-cooked vegetarian meal, prepared by either SkyART staff or a volunteer chef for lunch, and after they have up to two hours of open studio time. P3S participants love open studio time and each participant works diligently on their own independent project in preparation for a final exhibition. Teaching Artists work one-on-one with participants to offer feedback and encouragement, prompting the teens to think more deeply and critically about their art practice.
